The North East Borough Wastewater Department was awarded the Wastewater System of the Year by the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association. The award is the first presented to the plant in North East Pennsylvania which services North East Borough and North East Township along with the many large industrial businesses in the community.
The Borough has made significant capital investments over the course of the past two (2) decades to handle the nearly 1.5 million gallons of wastewater processed per day at their two (2) facilities. The most recent investment of $14 Million dollars funded through PennVEST and completed in 2021, added a new chemical feed building, 525,000 gallon secondary clarifier, new state of the art centrifuge, emergency generators, pump station, and an effluent line directionally bored from the wastewater plant Site II to Lake Erie seventy-five (15) feet underground, travelling 5,000 feet.
The Wastewater System of the Year award has been issued by PRWA for the past fifteen (15) years and extends to all eligible Wastewater plants in Pennsylvania. The Borough was nominated for its innovative methods of handling the solids and loading of the major industries with such a relatively moderate population. The North East Wastewater plant is built to service the needs of a town of nearly 250,000 in population. “This is a tremendous honor and would not be possible without our dedicated, hard-working staff and industrial partners,” said North East Borough Wastewater Superintendent, Julio Pazmino. Pazmino, who has been with the North East Borough Wastewater Department since 2013 noted, “the Borough’s timely investments will lead to greater efficiency in handling the needs to today and tomorrow.”
